On Wednesday 9 June 2010 the report of the Hybrid Materials Workshop was handed to Renzo Tomellini and Helge Wessel of the Eurpean Commission. The report is the result of the workshop on 3 and 4 March 2010 in Luxembourg. Suschem organised this workshop in close collaboration with Dutch Polymer Institute and was sponsored by the European Commission.

The Belgian Polymer Group (BPG) awards the International BPG Award 2010 to Professor Ulrich S. Schubert, chairman of the Technology Area High-Throughput Experimentation of the Dutch Polymer Institute. Prof. Schubert is full professor at Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena and chair of the Laboratory of Macromolecular and Organic Chemistry. Every two years the BPG recognises outstanding contributions in the field of polymer science in combination with strong cooperations with Belgian polymer groups.

The Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI) will organise a workshop on Bio-Based Polymers in Amsterdam (Schiphol Airport). The mission of the DPI is to foster the science and technology of polymers and polymer materials in all its facets. Scientific research and innovations by chemical manufacturers have revolutionized the processability and functionality of bio-based polymers.

The Dutch Polymer Institute scored a Citation-Impact factor of 2.19 for its scientific publications. The latest report of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science proves this result in Science and Technology Indicators 2010. The score of DPI is more than twice as high as the global average.

Katja Loos, associate professor at the University of Groningen, has been appointed DPI Fellow. The Dutch Polymer Institute is a top institute in which international universities and companies work together on the next generation of polymers and applications thereof. After Theo Dingemans of Delft University of Technology, Katja Loos is the second "rising star" in the DPI community, having been granted one million euros for research. The actual start of the projects will be negotiated between the Fellow and the DPI management.

On Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 March the ‘Hybrid Materials Workshop', took place in Luxembourg. The event was organized by the European Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry (SusChem), in close collaboration with DPI.

The 2010 DSM Performance Materials Award is granted to Professor Han Meijer of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Polymer expert Meijer receives the award 'for outstanding achievements in research related to the properties, processing and engineering of polymers.'

The 2009 Borealis Student Innovation Award for the doctorate degree was granted to Dr. Amir Jabri, During his studies at the University of Ottawa (Canada) Dr. Amir Jabri was involved in a DPI project in the Polyolefins Technology Area. To utilize the innovative capacity of Small and Medium/sized Enterprises (SME) and to facilitate technology transfer, DPI wants to stimulate participation of SME's to its programmes. Two new participation possibilities have been developed: Basic participation and Group participation.

The first ‘Polyolefins Research' course has been successfully completed. The DPI Value Centre sees the course as a step in the direction of the foundation of the World Polymer Academy.

The Annual Meeting, held last week at the University of Eindhoven, was a great success. Around 220 members of the DPI community attended the first day of the meeting, the theme of which was "Polymers and the Biosphere". There were several speakers throughout the day, all of whom shared their vision on the theme of this year's meeting.

At this year's Annual Meeting, held in Eindhoven, the Golden Thesis Award was granted to Casper van Oosten. His thesis entitled "Responsive Liquid Crystal Networks" was chosen by the jury as the absolute winner. It was clear that his research and thesis truly captured the jury's attention. The presentation only confirmed this.

On October 14th it was announced that Jacques Noordermeer, scientific chairman of the DPI technology area Performance Polymers, will receive the George S. Whitby Award 2010. This award is of the American Chemical Society Rubber Division and is rewarded to Prof. Dr. Ir. Noordermeer for Distinguished Teaching and Research.

The DPI aims at securing relevant long-term pre-competitive polymer science and education for its industrial partners. With the DPI Fellowship as one of the instruments, DPI wants to develop young, talented academics with a tenured or tenure track position at Dutch Universities partnering with the DPI.

Dutch Universities want to attract talented polymer Post-Doc researchers and prepare them for a polymer-related professor position. To this aim DPI stimulates the formation of new academic polymer-related chairs via a new initiative, the DPI Fellowship Programme.

The Borealis Student Innovation Award recognizes the most innovative students having graduated in the area of chemistry, polymers or applications with a particular focus on polyolefins, olefins and melamine.

Druk bezocht symposium van TU/e, FEI en DPI

Vanwege de enorme vooruitgang in de elektronenmicroscopie organiseren de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e), FEI Company en het Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI) op maandag 8 september hierover een symposium. Microscopen zijn verbeterd dat de elektronenbundel zachte materialen niet meer meteen kapotschiet. Daardoor kunnen zelfs polymeren en biomaterialen zonder schade worden bekeken.
