Enhancing recyclability and performance of thermoplastic composites

Transport sustainability starts with reducing weight. Polymer composites offer a valuable route to lightweight design, but traditional thermoset systems are difficult to recycle. ODIN addresses this challenge by focusing on thermoplastic composites, which can be remoulded and reused. The ambition: develop reliable recycling routes that preserve material performance, making circularity a real option for high-performance composite components.

Developing stable processes for high-performance recycling

ODIN explores direct remoulding techniques that retain long fibres, which are critical for strength and durability. The project investigates how production and use-phase degradation affects recycled output, and seeks to minimise variability through matrix optimisation. Modelling tools are being refined to predict part performance based on input material condition.

Delivering design rules and material insights for industry

ODIN aims to produce actionable outcomes: better control of degradation, improved remoulding protocols, and validated guidelines for designing recyclable thermoplastic composites. These results will support manufacturers in integrating recycled content without compromising quality or safety.

Enabling sustainable lightweight applications in transport

By extending the usability of recycled thermoplastic composites, ODIN supports the mobility sector’s transition to circular design. The project helps reduce both weight and waste, lowering emissions while keeping materials in use.
