Fundamental research drives breakthrough in aramid fibre innovation

In collaboration with DPI, Teijin Aramid has achieved significant improvements in the performance and durability of aramid fibres. This breakthrough demonstrates how fundamental research not only enhances scientific understanding but also leads to real-world applications.

Teijin Aramid, a global leader in aramid fibre technology, partnered with DPI to gain access to advanced research techniques, including solid-state NMR and Raman-spectroscopy. These analyses provided critical insights into the interaction between aramid fibres and polymer matrices, leading to the development of enhanced material properties.

One of the practical outcomes of this research is the creation of stronger and more durable aramid fibres. These materials are now being used in ballistic protection gear and transport belt systems, demonstrating how fundamental research directly impacts industrial applications.

“Thanks to our collaboration with DPI, we have broadened our perspective and gained valuable external insights that strengthen our core expertise,” says Pieter de Lange, former Principal Scientist at Teijin Aramid.

This success story highlights the importance of long-term investment in fundamental research—a commitment that DPI continues to uphold, even as the political landscape challenges its funding.
