DPI is proud to congratulate Prof. Dr. Costantino Creton, our esteemed Scientific Advisor, on receiving the 2025 Medema Award. The award was presented today at the European Polymer Congress (EPF 2025) in Groningen, recognising his outstanding contributions to polymer science and his enduring impact on the Dutch polymer community.
Recognising excellence in polymer science
The Medema Award, named in honour of Dick Medema — former R&D director at Shell and a unifying force within the Dutch polymer sector — is bestowed annually by Polymer Technology Netherlands (PTN). Each year, the award is presented to research considered the most groundbreaking in the field of polymers.
A driving force within DPI since 2011
Since joining DPI in 2011 as Scientific Chair of the Performance Polymers programme, Prof. Dr. Creton has played a pivotal role in ensuring the scientific excellence of our research initiatives. His responsibilities encompassed advising industrial partners on research topics, selecting academic collaborators and external reviewers, and providing insightful feedback during proposal evaluations. His leadership in chairing review meetings has been marked by professionalism and a commitment to fostering collaborative excellence.
Advising the future of polymer innovation
Currently, as Scientific Advisor alongside Prof. Dr. Bernhard Rieger, Prof. Dr. Creton continues to influence DPI’s strategic direction across our three fundamental research programmes. His role as a jury member for the DPI Golden Thesis Award further underscores his dedication to nurturing emerging talent in the field.
Costantino is our detective Columbo in science of the DPI program. He observes, listens without prejudice, and comes with sharpening questions, perspectives, and approach to get to the bottom of it. With his broad and deep scientific understanding, he advises and challenges academic proposals and results facilitating well-balanced industrial research.

Prof. Dr. Creton’s extensive knowledge and global network have earned him deep respect among both academic and industrial partners. Erwin Houben (Envalior) aptly describes him as “our detective Columbo in science of the DPI programme”. He highlights his ability to observe, listen, and pose incisive questions that drive research forward.
Prof. Creton reflects on the award: “I am very honoured by the award and I thank the Dutch academic and industrial community for continuous collaborations and support.”
Prof. Dr. Costantino Creton’s receipt of the 2025 Medema PTN Lecture Award is a testament to his unwavering commitment to advancing polymer science and fostering collaboration between academia and industry. DPI celebrates this well-deserved recognition and extends heartfelt congratulations on behalf of our entire community.
